Cargo Tracking Use Case

Background

Nippon Express is a global logistics provider. Their goals are to swiftly and flexibly respond to customer needs, be prepared to deal with crisis and be both environmentally and socially responsible.

Nippon approached GPSit to help address the following specific business objectives:

  • Obtain greater visibility into independent subcarrier shipments

  • Prevent delayed shipments due to delivery route problems

  • Ensure performance of independent drivers

  • Optimize shipment handling

  • Provide early notice of inbound shipments to clients and distribution hubs

  • Provide real time shipment information to clients, including arrival time validation

  • Safeguard against shrinkage, theft and hijacking concerns

Requirements

Since much of Nippon’s ground shipments are handled by independent carriers, a portable, battery operated GPS tracking solution was needed. For single stop shipments, the tracker was to be affixed to a pallet within the shipment, and for multi-stop routes, attached to shipment documentation. In both cases, the tracker needed to be easily retrieved and quickly re-commissioned for the next shipment.

Problem Solution

Nippon selected GPSit’s cloud based TrackFusion application for management of the portable trackers. Core features such as Geofence alerting and notification capabilities were utilized to automate routine monitoring functions.

As a key part of the solution, GPSit’s PAT battery operated trackers were selected due to:

  • Small physical size enabling covert deployments

  • Superior coverage on Verizon network

  • Ability to monitor in-transit conditions (vibration, shock, temperature, humidity, etc.)

  • Ability to obtain GPS fixes while covertly located inside of shipment contents in enclosed trailers

The robust combination of GPSit’s TrackFusion tracking platfom, PAT t and startup professional services from GPSit helped ensure a successful solution deployment.

Results

Nippon immediately began to obtain great results. Highlights include:

  • Real time ability to respond to in transit logistics issues as they arise

  • Ability to audit performance of subcarriers

  • Ability to validate on time delivery performance for clients

  • Enhanced service offerings by providing clients real time visibility into shipment status and condition

  • A means of safeguarding against crisis situations

  • Improved customer satisfaction and trust
